Icons

I’ve been dealing with issues of male icons in my work recently. No artist functions in a vacuum, but I think I could use feedback from my readers.

Are there any famous males that stand out as an icon masculinity to you? What male displays what it is to be a man in America, for good or ill, to you?

  1. I’ve lived from young to getting older with this Artist – Bob Dylan. I saw him years ago at the Olympia before they tore it down. What is so great is that he is still living and creating for so many years, and seems he will until IT’S over.

  2. Male Icons: 20th Century:

The Duke, James Dean, FDR, JFK, Babe Ruth, Joe Namath, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Harrison Ford, the list could go on. Over a beer and 20.

All the previous name invoke some sort of iconic visage for a whole host of reasons, got an idea for a piece.

  3. President Obama is a man who embodies all of the best things about masculinity. He’s strong, accommodating, reasonable, intelligent, articulate, confident, and a man who seems to understand that the ability to negotiate and compromise [rather than “lowering the boom”] is a measure of what a “man” is.

The good thing is that there are *lots* of men like him walking around among us! Thank goodness!
